Well after 33 seasons of Coach’s Corner, Sportsnet has decided to let Don Cherry go after racial remarks during his last broadcast. On Saturday’s episode, the 85-year-old went on a tirade about people who don’t where poppies on remembrance day, and claiming that those people were immigrants from Toronto and Mississauga. Sportsnet has now released an apology statement, and also announced that Don Cherry would be stepping down. “Following further discussions with Don Cherry after Saturday night’s broadcast, it has been decided it is the right time for him to immediately step down,” said Bart Yamsley in his statement on Monday. “During the broadcast, he made divisive remarks that do not represent our values or what we stand for.” According to the Star, the stubborn old man is now saying he is not sorry, and that he would not have been fired had he apologized for his statement. “I could have stayed if I had wiped the floor with myself, and returned as a tame person. I don’t feel that the people who watch Coach’s Corner deserve something like that. I would rather go out on my shield. I guess I am going out on my shield,” Cherry told the Star. unfortunately for Don, this is Canada where we take pride in our cultural diversity, maybe he can find work in the States….
