Be on the lookout for a nasty critter as a veterinary clinic in southern Ontario is warning people that they have discovered a rare tick, known for giving it’s victims meat allergies. According to CTV News, The Oakridge Animal Clinic in London Ontario says a woman recently brought in her cat that was carrying a Lone Star tick, something the vets said could only have been encountered locally, as the owner said the cat has no travel history. Lone Star ticks are from parts of the southeastern States and Mexico but can sometimes travel more north by traveling on the backs of migrating birds. Scientists claim that a bite from a Lone Star tick can cause an allergy to alpha-gal, a carbohydrate found in red meat to which they say they have no explanation for. “It’s a very scary tick,” said Dr. Gillian Egli, veterinarian and owner of Oakridge Animal Clinic to CTV News London. “It carries diseases that can be transmitted to dogs, but also to humans.” So far most cases found in humans have been located in the U.S.A., Europe and Australia, for more details on this terrifying creepy crawler, click on the link below.
